What Documents You Need to Sell a Rolex (or Any Luxury Watch)

Guides

A Rolex with full paperwork can sell for 15–30% more than the same watch sold "naked." Knowing what to gather — and what to do if something is missing — directly affects your final price.

The full set

Collectors and dealers refer to a watch with all original documentation as a "full set." For a Rolex, that typically means:

  • Original box (inner and outer)
  • Warranty card with matching serial number, dated and stamped by an authorized dealer
  • Booklets — manual, anchor card, translation card, chronometer certificate
  • Hang tags (the green Rolex tag)
  • Original receipt from the authorized dealer (helpful but not always present)
  • Service records from Rolex or an authorized service center
  • Polishing wallet / pouch if it came with one

Why each document matters

  • Warranty card proves authenticity and original purchase date. A matching serial is the single most valuable document.
  • Service history tells the buyer the movement is healthy and what's been replaced.
  • Original receipt establishes provenance and clean ownership.
  • Box and booklets matter to collectors, especially for vintage and discontinued references.

If documents are missing

You can still sell — just expect a lower offer. Steps that help:

  • Get the watch authenticated by a reputable dealer or service like WatchCSA, Bob's Watches, or an authorized jeweler
  • Request a service estimate from Rolex (RSC) — even an estimate sheet is documentation
  • Photograph the case-back, lugs, clasp, and movement (if you can open it safely)
  • Record the serial and reference numbers clearly

Other paperwork buyers ask for

  • High-quality photos: dial straight-on, case profile, clasp, bracelet, serial between lugs
  • Time-keeping check: a recent regulation report shows the watch runs in spec
  • Customs / import documentation for international buyers

Where to sell

Specialist platforms and reputable dealers tend to give better prices than generic marketplaces because buyers there pay for full sets. The BigStash.app marketplace lets you list watches with the full metadata and document set you've already cataloged.

Tracking documentation in BigStash.app

For each watch you can attach the original receipt, warranty card scan, service records, and high-resolution photos directly to the item. When you list it for sale, all that documentation is ready to share with serious buyers.
